Status — where is this document?

Open · In Review · Answered · ClosedA stage in the document’s life. It belongs to the document.

Ball in Court — who has to act?

A person’s name.The one human the whole thing is waiting on right now.

How they move apart

An RFI can sit at In Review for eight days while the ball moves from the architect, to the structural engineer, and back to the architect. The status never changed. Three different people were on the hook. That’s why:
  • “What’s the status?” tells you how far along it is.
  • “Who’s got the ball?” tells you who to call this morning.
In a coordination meeting, read the ball in court column, not the status column. Status tells you nothing about who’s late.
