Status = what stage it's at

Open, In Review, Answered, Closed. A property of the document.

Ball in Court = whose desk it's on

A person. The one human who has to do something next.
These move independently, and people constantly treat them as one thing. An RFI can sit at In Review for a week with the ball in three different people’s courts. Knowing the status tells you where the document is. Knowing the ball in court tells you who to call.
