# Uploading a spec book: Uploaded vs. Published

> Uploading starts the indexing. Publishing is what makes the book searchable and attachable. Nothing works until you publish.

<Warning>
  **This is the thing nobody guesses.** The Specifications screen shows two lists — **Uploaded** and **Published**. Uploading a spec book does almost nothing on its own. **Publishing** is what makes it searchable and available to attach to submittals.

## What each list means

    The file is in DirtView and is being read and indexed. It is not usable yet. Nobody can search it, and you can't attach its sections to anything.

    The book is live. Sections are searchable, they can be attached to submittals, and Spec Ask can answer against them.

## Do it in order

    Check that the section numbers look like your book before you publish.

    Now it's real. **Skip this step and everything downstream quietly doesn't work** — that's the support ticket.
