# Creating a project

> Project number, contractor vs. owner, job site and project type — plus what Dig Alert and Apprentice Required actually do.

<Note>
  **The short version.** Get the project number and the contractor/owner right at the start. Everything downstream — RFI numbers, submittal logs, notifications — hangs off them.

## Fill it out

<Steps>
  <Step title="Project name and number">
    Use the number your company already uses on paperwork. If the GC has their own number for the job, put yours here and keep theirs in the description — one number per field.

  <Step title="Contractor and owner">
    Two different parties. The **contractor** is who's building it; the **owner** is who it belongs to when it's done. Getting these backwards shows up on every document you send out.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Job site">
    The physical address. This is what drives location fields on forms and tickets, so it's worth getting right.

    Two flags with real-world consequences:

    * **Dig Alert** — for jobs where you have to notify before you excavate.
    * **Apprentice Required** — for jobs with apprenticeship requirements, typically public works.

  You can fix any of this later from **Project Info** — see [The Project Dashboard](/projects/project-dashboard). But the project number gets stamped on records as they're created, so change it early or not at all.
