# Creating a submittal: number, version, revision

> Three numbers that look alike. How to override the auto-suggested number, and which iteration the list shows you.

## The three numbers

    Identifies the **item** — usually tied to the spec section. It doesn't change.

## Create it

  <Step title="Pick the spec section">
    From your published spec book. If the list is empty, the book isn't published. → [Uploaded vs. Published](/specifications/upload-a-spec-book)

  <Step title="Accept or override the suggested number">
    DirtView suggests the next number. Override it if your GC or the owner requires their own numbering — but then be consistent for the whole job.

  <Step title="Attach the package">
    Product data, shop drawings, samples documentation — whatever the section requires.

## Which iteration the list shows

The submittal log shows one row per item — the current iteration, not every version you ever sent. To see the earlier ones, open the submittal and look at its versions.
